Neighborhood Development Project Fund ApplicationsHello Everyone:
Hope you are enjoying your summer! Just dropped by to let you know that the NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FUND Round 2 Applications are now available! You may download a copy right from our site, just click on Public document and flyers section and look for NDPF Neighbhood Assembly application. There is also an information packet to help answer some questions you may have about the application process, a guiding committee member contact sheet, a City councilmember contact sheet, Neighborhood Assembly meeting calendar for August and September and last but surely not the least, a NDPF Workshop schedule. PHEW!!!!
Now that all of that's been said, you need to go and get your application, and read through it carefully. If you have an idea that you would like to submit, you can bring it with you to the very first workshop which is Thursday, July 31. Well, I'm out of breathe from saying all that so, until next time, I hope to see you at the workshop or at a Neighborhood meeting. You may also call 724-2489 with any questions.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 5, 2008 - HELP PLAN THE CELEBRATION!YOU CAN HELP PLAN ACTIVITIES FOR NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2008!
National Night Out is an annual event celebrated nationally. It is our neighborhoods' way of taking back our parks, neighborhoods and streets against crime. Get with your local church or neighborhood group and plan a community event. Rev. Henry Ausby coordinates this effort every year, this year Tyrone Gray is the assigned as Co-Chair of NNO and also George Sands IV has added his assistance as well. VINES in the newsInterested in Community Gardens? VINES meets tonight, May 19, 6pm, UDC
BINGHAMTON -- An effort to build a community garden on a city-owned lot on the West Side got a boost when officials rejected a bid to turn the space into a parking lot.
Members of the community gardening group Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments went door-to-door last week to drum up support for a garden at 128 Laurel Ave. Their effort in the neighborhood yielded a petition with more than 100 signatures, said group member Scott Barvainis. (more)

PRIDE IN THE WARD AWARD!!!PRIDE IN THE WARD AWARD!!! PRIDE...how does one explain it? A deeper love of self, home, job...COMMUNITY. Whatever the motivation is for each of us, the First Ward Neighborhood Assembly members have initiated a special monthly award appropriately titled "PRIDE in the WARD" Award to express gratitude to individuals restoring the pride. The award is given to First Ward residents who go above and beyond in their hard work and genuine inspirational efforts in home beautification, civic involvement or community initiatives that have made esthetic and quality of life difference in the First Ward. The "PRIDE" in the Ward" award has also generated a healthy growing "synergy" between First Ward and Greater Binghamton businesses and residents. Sponsors such as Century 21 Sbarra and Wells, AAMCO Transmission/service center, Tom's Gifts and Instantface screen printing have supported the efforts with donated prizes for the residents. First Ward residents, Pastor Hall of the Church of God and Prophecy on Glenwood Ave and Wilson Ave residents Ott and Vien Souvathong have been the first two recipients of the award. An important factor too is that neighbors nominate neighbors for the award. Again making the recipients feel that their efforts and "Pride" are appreciated in helping to build a stronger block and community The First Ward Neighborhood Assembly hopes that the "PRIDE in the WARD awards will generate more individuals and businesses to not only get on the beautification/civic wave of improvement, but will also get more of us personally involved in the neighborhood assembly's growth too. The assembly's objective with the PRIDE in the WARD award is to restore a healthy confidence in our community.

Mayor Matt Ryan joined community leaders to welcome the launch of the Fresh Cycles Youth Program at a news conference Thursday,
April 3, 2008 at the police substation at 108 Liberty Street. (The substation will be officially rededicated as the Lee Barta Community Center in July).
On Friday, April 4, 2008, the program held a raffle fund raiser at Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts, 106 State Street.
Fresh Cycles also held an open house at the substation on Saturday,
April 5, 2008.

Open for Business -- Triple Cities Boxing/Education Triple Cities Boxing/Education Program proudly announced their Grand Opening!!! on MLK Day, Mon. Jan. 21st, 2008 @ 275 Chenango Street in the Chenango Plaza.
The program is designed as an after school program for Youths 9-17. Students will be instructed in the art of Boxing. Students will also have homework/tutorial sessions several times per week. In addition guest speakers from D.A.R.E, Binghamton University, S.A.D.D., and many others will come to the gym on a weekly basis to educate youth on serious issues they will face.
The gym will also be open to the public for a small fee at non-program hours.

Graffiti Abatement
 BGAT worked Sunday morning August 12, 2007 on beautifying Water St. and Rolison St. - right next to Elderidge St. - as well as the river wall next to the new riverwalk heading towards the North Side of town.
 A special thanks to our three volunteers for helping out August 14, 2007 and especially Kim Cuddy for bringing six people doing community service.
Working with so many people makes cleaning graffiti so much easier.
 We were also able to clean up a lot of trash as you'll see in the photos. One thing we all concluded is there's a great need for trash cans in this area as there are none to be seen anywhere within this vicinity.

Council Approves VISTA GrantCouncil Approves VISTA Grant. In a special legislative session at council chambers Wednesday evening, September 12, 2007, the Binghamton City Council approved funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant money funds twelve AmeriCorps*VISTAs to serve as structual supports for the Binghamton Neighborhood Assemblies Project. Neighborhood Assembly functions will continue. Thank you to residents for your continued support of the VISTAs and we look forward to a succesful and productive year with BNAP.

What is a Binghamton Neighborhood Assembly?
Binghamton Neighborhood Assemblies (BNAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Binghamton’s eight neighborhoods to encourage citizen* participation in city government. Working as neighborhood advocacy/action groups, NAs help improve communication between the citizens of Binghamton and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each neighborhood. BNAs serve as organized, democratic forums where neighbors can learn about public issues that affect them and advise city representatives of their concerns and needs. From stop signs to major development projects, the BNAs offer residents an innovative way to not only learn of neighborhood and city issues, but actively participate in and engage the planning and decision-making process of local government.
*Citizens are defined as residents, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, community organizations, and educational institutions.

is now broadcasting the
"Inside Binghamton" radio program every Thursday evening from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.
Hosted by Ms. Daphne Gathers, with the engineering and production assistance of Tyrone Gray, this show features news, announcements, interviews, pre-recorded performances by City school and church music groups, and other information. The show's goal is to highlight the positive things going on in Binghamton and inform residents of opportunities to engage in civic participation as well as encourage their involvement.
